Burnout Isn’t Motherhood: Being Exhausted Is Not Proof You’re a Good Mom

Burnout Isn’t Motherhood

Burnout Isn’t Motherhood.

Being exhausted is not proof that you're being a good mom.

But somewhere along the way, a lot of women learned to associate being a "good mother" with how much of themselves they're willing to give away.

You take care of the kids.

You remember the appointments.

You manage the schedules.

You anticipate what everyone needs before they ask.

And when there's finally a little space left over?

You give that away, too.

Because self-sacrifice can start to feel like love.

But when you're constantly giving everyone everything and keeping almost nothing for yourself, your nervous system eventually sends the bill.

Burnout.

Resentment.

Anxiety.

Overwhelm.

That doesn't mean you don't love your family enough.

It may mean the way you've been trying to care for everyone isn't sustainable anymore.

A healthy mom isn't a selfish mom. A healthy mom is a sustainable mom.

And sustainability sometimes means asking yourself a question that can feel surprisingly uncomfortable:

"Am I putting on my oxygen mask first before I help everyone else?"

Taking care of yourself doesn't take away from the people you love.

It helps make sure there's still a you left to love them.

Truth Bomb: Burnout Isn’t Motherhood

Dana:

Being exhausted is not proof you're being a good mom.

Somewhere along the way, many women learned that self-sacrifice equals love.

I bet that's resonating with a lot of us right now.

So they keep giving everyone everything and keep almost nothing for themselves.

But eventually, your nervous system sends the bill through burnout, resentment, anxiety, overwhelm.

A healthy mom isn't a selfish mom.

A healthy mom is a sustainable mom.

So next time you keep getting asked to do all the things, ask yourself:

"Am I putting on my face mask first for oxygen before I help others?"

If not, take the time that you need to take care of yourself first, so you can be the best mom for your children and the best person for those around you.

That's your Truth Bomb for the day.
