You Don't Need a Better Routine: Burnout Is a Capacity Problem, Not a Planning Problem
A better planner won't fix burnout.
A color-coded calendar won't either.
If you've ever told yourself,
"I just need a better routine and then everything will feel manageable,"
you're not alone.
Welcome to another Truth Bomb from The Truth About Healing Podcast.
In this episode, Dana explains why You Don't Need a Better Routine to recover from burnout. Instead, she explores how burnout often happens when your nervous system has been carrying more than it has the capacity to hold.
The goal isn't to become more productive.
The goal is to increase your capacity by learning when your body needs you to pause.

You Don't Need a Better Routine
Dana:
I just need a better routine and I'll stop feeling burned out.
Does that sound familiar?
Well, that's a myth.
You don't need a better routine.
You need more capacity.
You can have the perfect schedule and still feel exhausted if your nervous system is overloaded.
Burnout isn't a planning issue.
It's a capacity issue.
There's only so much we can do in 24 hours.
No matter how organized you are, your body has limits.
So here's something to try today.
Track when your body shifts into urgency.
Take a moment to scan your body from head to toe.
Notice when your heart rate starts to increase.
Notice when your shoulders tense up.
Notice when your breathing becomes shallow.
Those are your nervous system's signals.
They're not signs that you're failing.
They're your body's way of saying,
"This is a bit much right now."
You don't have to stop everything you're doing.
But you may need to pause.
Take five seconds.
Take five minutes.
Catch your breath.
Then ask yourself:
When do I notice my pressure spike?
When do I start feeling rushed?
When do I feel like I can't stop, even when I want to?
Those patterns are often what drive burnout.
Not your calendar.
Not your planner.
Not your routine.
One of the most effective ways to prevent burnout isn't becoming more efficient.
It's learning when to do less.
Building capacity begins by listening to your body before it reaches exhaustion.
If this resonates with you, the EMDR Therapy Progress Journal can help you better understand your nervous system, recognize patterns, and support your healing journey, whether you're doing EMDR therapy or simply looking to better understand yourself.
