Key Takeaways from this Interview

🔑 1. “Feelings Buried Alive Never Die”

Dana explains how unprocessed emotions stay trapped in the body, eventually leading to emotional and physical issues. EMDR therapy works to unlock these stuck feelings and rewire your nervous system’s response to stress and trauma.

🔑 2. The Power of EMDR Therapy

Dana breaks down Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)—a powerful method that helps clients reprocess painful memories, reduce emotional triggers, and build new, adaptive pathways in the brain.

🔑 3. Burnout Isn’t Just Stress—it’s a Warning Sign

As Dana shares in the episode, burnout can look different for everyone, from exhaustion and emotional numbness to over-functioning and anxiety. She offers practical tools for spotting early warning signs and re-centering before it’s too late.

🔑 4. Therapy Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All

Not all therapists (or therapy styles) fit every client. Dana emphasizes the importance of “therapist shopping” to find someone who resonates with you—and why it’s okay to try multiple sessions before committing.

🎙 Podcast Interview Script:

🧠 Segment 1: Why Therapy Matters More Than Ever

Dave: Let’s start here: A lot of people feel like therapy is intimidating or even unnecessary until things fall apart. Why do you think therapy is so important—even for people who feel like they’re ‘holding it together’?

Dana: Therapy isn’t just for crises—it’s about preventing them. So many high performers function well on the outside but are emotionally overloaded on the inside. I help my clients unpack that hidden stress before it turns into burnout, physical illness, or relationship breakdowns.

With EMDR therapy, we go beyond surface-level talk and actually reprocess old experiences that are keeping you stuck. Healing isn’t just about coping—it’s about rewiring your brain and nervous system so you can live fully present.

🔥 Segment 2: What is EMDR Therapy?

Dave: I’ve heard so much about EMDR, but it sounds intimidating if you’re new to it. What exactly is EMDR therapy and how does it work?

Dana: Great question! EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a therapy that helps your brain reprocess traumatic or stressful memories so they stop triggering you in the present.

We use bilateral stimulation—eye movements, taps, or sounds—to activate both sides of the brain. It’s like your brain’s natural way of filing away those old ‘unresolved’ experiences, so they stop controlling your emotions, your body, and your behavior.

🩺 Segment 3: Burnout & Emotional Overload

Dave: Burnout comes up a lot in our audience. How do you know if you’re burnt out versus just having a bad week?"

Dana: Burnout is chronic. If you notice constant fatigue, irritability, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or even physical symptoms like headaches or stomach issues—your nervous system is waving the red flag.

One tool I love is tracking emotional triggers and stress patterns, which is exactly why I created The EMDR Therapy Progress Journal. It gives people a structured way to identify what’s draining them and build healthy coping tools—even if they’re not in therapy yet.

🏥 Segment 4: Getting Started with Therapy

Dave: For someone listening who’s never been to therapy, what’s the first step they should take?

Dana: Start small. Book a consultation and talk to a therapist without pressure. At Peaceful Living Mental Health Counseling, we offer both in-person sessions in Scarsdale, NY, and virtual therapy anywhere in New York.

We specialize in trauma-informed care, EMDR therapy, and helping high performers and parents who feel overwhelmed. Therapy doesn’t have to be scary—it’s about finding someone you can trust and feel safe with.

📖 Segment 5: Tools You Can Use Now

Dave: For listeners who aren’t ready for therapy yet, what’s one tool they can start using today?

Dana: Your breath is powerful. Simple breathing shifts—like longer exhales when you’re anxious or energizing breaths when you’re drained—can reset your nervous system in minutes.

And of course, my book, The EMDR Therapy Progress Journal, walks you through exercises to map your triggers, calm your body, and reframe your thinking—whether or not you’re in therapy yet.

🎯 Segment 6: Final Thoughts + Call to Action

Dave: This has been amazing, Dana. Before we wrap, where can people connect with you, book therapy, or grab your book?

Dana: Follow me on Instagram at @the_emdr_coach for trauma healing tips and EMDR insights.

You can book a session at Peaceful Living Mental Health Counseling here.
