Functioning Isn't Healing: Why Looking Okay Doesn't Mean Your Nervous System Is Okay
Welcome to another Truth Bomb from The Truth About Healing Podcast.
You're going to work.
You're paying your bills.
You're answering the texts.
You're showing up for your family.
From the outside, everything looks fine.
So you must be okay...right?
Not necessarily.
In this Truth Bomb, Dana explains why Functioning Isn't Healing, and why someone can look completely capable on the outside while their nervous system has been operating in survival mode for years.
This can be especially common among first responders and others who spend their lives being the person everyone else depends on.
Sometimes functioning isn't evidence that you're okay.
Sometimes you've simply become really good at functioning under pressure.
Memorable Quote
"Healing isn't pretending you can carry more pressure. Healing is finally creating enough safety in your body that you don't have to live in survival mode anymore."

Functioning Isn't Healing
Functioning is not the same as healing.
Just because you're functioning doesn't mean you're okay.
A lot of people think,
"Well, I'm going to work, paying my bills, showing up for everybody else, so I must be fine."
But your nervous system can stay in survival mode for years while you still look high-functioning on the outside.
Especially for first responders.
Hypervigilance becomes normal.
Being emotionally shut down becomes normal.
Constant tension becomes normal.
And eventually, your body stops asking politely for help.
It starts demanding it.
Healing isn't pretending you can carry more pressure.
Healing is finally creating enough safety in your body that you don't have to live in survival mode anymore.
That's your Truth Bomb for today.
